Bajo mi piel — David Catá

Bajo mi piel

Small photographs of his loved ones, placed beneath the skin of his palm: the body as a shelter for memory.

About the series

Bajo mi piel is a project begun in 2011 that explores the relationship between the body, affection and the permanence of those who are part of our lives. Through a real performative action, Catá places small photographs of family members and loved ones beneath the skin of the palm of his hand, turning the body into a space where memory takes on a physical presence.

The images disappear from the surface, yet they go on inhabiting the inside of the hand. This gesture does not seek to hide them, but to make visible a universal idea: the people we love remain within us long after time transforms their presence. The body ceases to be understood as a limit and becomes a place where our bonds find refuge.

In 2020 the project expands with a video-art piece and an original musical composition. In it, his hand is symbolically transformed into a violin, and the music is born from the very place where the photographs remain. As the melody unfolds, the seeds sown beneath the skin begin to germinate, opening a dialogue between the growth of nature and the continuity of memory. What seemed hidden thus reveals its capacity to stay alive and keep transforming.

Bajo mi piel reflects on the way we build our identity through those around us. Just as roots stay invisible while holding up a tree, the people who have marked our lives keep quietly inhabiting us, forming part of who we are even when we can no longer see them.
