About the series
Cicatrices abiertas is a photographic and performance project by David Catá, born from the story of his grandmother Lolina and the need to preserve a memory that lived for years in her words. A video and two photographs reflect on how great historical events keep dwelling in people long after they end.
His grandmother lived through the Civil War as a child. As Alzheimer advanced, something struck the artist: while recent memories faded, the episodes of the war returned with startling clarity. Fear and loss were still present decades later, as if time had never managed to close those wounds.
On the skin of David Catá, that memory becomes visible. The wounds of the body work as a metaphor for the emotional scars that remain open, and for all the anonymous voices that, together, form the collective memory of a country.
