About the series
Recuerdos is a photographic series by David Catá about the passage of time and the desire to keep what we know will inevitably change. Photographs of relatives and loved ones are frozen in blocks of ice, confronting two ways of preserving memory that share one condition: their fragility.
Like photography, ice tries to fix an instant. For a while it protects the image and seems to keep it intact, but the thaw transforms it: cracks appear, the water slides away and the faces distort until they vanish beneath a new matter.
The work draws a parallel between ice and memory. No memory stays unaltered: over the years, the images we keep of those we love also change. To remember is not to recover the past, but to create it anew from the present.
