About the series
Segunda piel is a photographic and performance project by David Catá about the body, identity and the mechanisms of protection we build throughout life. In a real action, he sews a glove and a sock onto his own body —two everyday objects meant to cover and insulate the skin— which, joined with needle and thread, cease to be garments and become a physical extension of the body.
The intervention alters the function of these objects: what is normally put on and taken off becomes fixed to the skin, erasing the distance between the body and what covers it.
The glove and the sock stand for the layers through which we relate to the world. Like them, people build a second skin made of experiences, lessons, fears and strategies to face what surrounds us.
