After being diagnosed with progressive hearing loss, David Catá sinks the accordion of his childhood into the sea.
About the series
Sonidos ahogados was born in 2010, after a diagnosis of otosclerosis, a degenerative condition that causes a progressive loss of hearing. For someone who had grown up studying music since childhood, this meant facing for the first time the possibility of ceasing to hear.
The central piece is a performance in the sea. With the same accordion on which he learned music as a child, David Catá walks into the water playing a melody; as the tide rises, the instrument floods and the sound fades little by little, like the illness itself. The sea becomes a metaphor for a silent, irreversible loss.
Yet the work does not end in silence. The fear of losing his hearing led him, paradoxically, to listen more closely: to discover everyday soundscapes and to compose the original scores of his own projects. Since then, photography, performance and music have been part of a single language.
